Rifflandia Music Festival

The warm weather has brought Rifflandia out of hibernation.

We got some great Z’s, with dreams of bands and magazines and rifflandabrau in our heads.

While we were sleeping, Rifflandia was nominated by CBC Radio 3 Searchlight for “The Best Music Festival in Canada”!

If you love your Rifflandia, vote! If we win we’ll celebrate by getting Jim some fertilizer, and maybe a bigger pot!

But it's Monday!

We can't believe that Rifflandia 2009 is over! It was great to see people singing along and discovering new music all at the same time! We loved the lead up, we loved the weekend and we can't wait for next year!

What happens now?

Well, we're looking forward to going to sleep before 3am and maybe... just maybe... watching a movie on the couch?? We're cleaning up and clearing out of the HQ this week, so if you're interested in getting a hoodie or t-shirt there are a few left. The hoodies are LARGE. There's more variety in the t-shirts.

Thanks for the kind emails and constructive feedback over the last few days. Massive thanks to the whole Rifflandia team and to our amazing volunteers! We couldn't have done it without you!

For all of you who had trouble getting into Market Square to see MOTHER MOTHER on Friday night, we have brought them back for two special shows tonight!

As you may have heard, last night there was a bottleneck downtown at Market Square when two of our early shows emptied out simultaneously before our later shows took full flight. This was an unforeseen scheduling hiccup and we apologize to those who got bumped from line due to security requirements. A situation like that is no fun for anyone, however, at the end of the day, the site has to be safe for everyone involved.

At Rifflandia we try to balance bringing an array of critically acclaimed artists to Victoria for a great weekend of music while keeping the ticket price low. We would like to explain our concept of the festival so as to manage expectations, and make everything a little clearer before we embark on another busy Rifflandia night!

1. Realistically you can expect to catch at least one great lineup a night. If you snag more than one then we expect that you are arriving early and/or that you’re seeing some of the amazing emerging artists on the bill.

2. If you are solely interested in the headliners, we strongly suggest that you make a clear choice as to which venue is your priority, arrive early to see the opening acts at that venue, and stay for the entire line-up until your headliner plays.

3. Victoria has limited number of late night venues for live music. Not everyone who sees an early headliner will be able to see a late headliner. Those who chose to forego the earlier shows to guarantee their spot at the later shows will obviously be given priority.

4. Remember UVic. Tonight Oopik, Neoteric, and Brendan Canning from Broken Social Scene will be performing at Vertigo, which is an amazing lineup and a really awesome and large venue.

It is for those reasons that ‘subject to age and capacity restrictions’ was made clear on every ticket sold and wristband picked up. If this is contrary to what you understood when purchasing your ticket, or if you were one of the people who got bumped from the Market Square lineup on Saturday night by security, we would like to hear your feedback. Please do not hesitate to email info@rifflandia.com for a prompt response, or stop by the HQ and let us know who you are. We are here to help.

We realize that this information would have been helpful yesterday and apologize if your night didn’t go as planned. Tonight we are going to try to regularly tweet which rooms are open and which rooms are at cap, and please re-tweet to your friends. Everyday we learn more and we thank you for growing with us.

We had a busy day at the HQ today, and tomorrow should be nutty!

Wristbands are looking sharp, and we've heard of a few $1 French Presses being enjoyed at Habit. Go Wristband Connect!!

People are wondering, which schedule is more current, the paper schedule... or the internet?

The answer... THE INTERNET! There have been some updates. Instead of seeing Buck 65 at 12:00am, you'll see him at 12:05am. Obviously, we like to sweat the details at Rifflandia.

However, there are some bigger changes! The biggest is probably CUFF THE DUKE moving to Market Square at 9:20pm on Friday.  Other than that it's all pretty minor. A full printed list of specific changes will be posted at the RIFF HQ, DITCH, and LYLE'S on Thursday.

Starting this Tuesday Sept 22 at 11am, bring your tickets, your ID/credit card or confirmation/order number printout from ticketweb (will call), down to the HQ at 523 Pandora, and we'll get a wristband on your wrist. We're open 11am - 11pm on Tuesday, 11am - 11pm on Weds, and 11am - 1am on Thursday, Friday, and Saturday.

BE SURE TO GIVE YOURSELF PLENTY OF TIME TO GET WRISTBANDED AT THE HQ BEFORE THE FESTIVAL GETS STARTED.

Spread the word, friends... the only place to get your wristband is at the Riff HQ, so come get yours before you head to the venues! Sweet Mother Mother it's September already!

Let's begin by saying it has been a busy time in Rifflandia over the past week. We set up a new home, our festival HQ, at 523 Pandora Ave in Market Square! We got some couches, a plant, and our friend Brian built us a beautiful countertop that makes a lot of people stop and say oooo... come visit and say oooo... for yourself. You can do all sorts of stuff here like check out the schedule, buy wristbands, and talk to the plant.

In other news, starting today we will be updating this site daily, so be sure to check back for important updates, fun stuff, and maybe even free ice cream! Did someone say free ice cream? Welcome to the official 2009 Rifflandia Music Festival website.  Here you will find what you've been waiting for, such as venues details and schedules, and complete artist information.

We're still working on more bells and whistles, but in the meantime, please enjoy the tour and let us know if you find any bugs or glitches.

Just over four weeks to go!

The (beautiful!) festival magazine is at the printer and we move into our new festival headquarters this coming Monday.   So close, we can almost hear the music!!
